PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) is a transparent, strong yet light polyester. It is used in the manufacture of bottles for mineral water, soft drinks, juices, alcoholic beverages, cooking oil, home cleaning products and other applications, both food- and non-food-related.
PET bottles are the most widely recycled plastic containers in Europe.
In 2015 1.8 million tonnes of PET bottles were collected for recycling. This represents an increase of 5% over 2014.
The PET recycling rate in 2015 was almost 59%, an increase of 2% over the 2014 rate.
The main use of rPET is in bottle-to-bottle applications.
The average recycled content in PET bottles in Europe is 11.7%.
